My favorite thing about this resource is that it made my life EASIER. Here is what using Simple Studies’ Night Creatures PDF required of me:
- Print a coloring page.
- Turn on an audio book.
That’s it.
This 15 lesson study is based on the fun and well-written book Among the Night People by Clara Dillingham Pierson. We used a free audiobook version on the Librivox app (it’s also available online here). I literally just printed off a coloring page each week and the children colored while they listened to a chapter. Each chapter is between 10-15 minutes of reading.
I wouldn’t be doing the resource justice if I said that was all it is, because it includes a lot more. There are picture book suggestions and nature study suggestions, as well as suggested reading in the Handbook of Nature Study. I look forward to a time when I can do those other things. For now, the coloring page and the audiobook have been a lot of fun! It has sparked questions from my children about the different animals. They are a lot more engaged than they were when we were just reading the Burgess Animal book and narrating. Even my child who hates to color is coloring these!
A fun idea that we plan to use when the weather warms up is to set up a wildlife cam at night to see which animals are active in our neighborhood.
Simple Studies: Night Creatures is available for $10 from the Simple Studies website. I bought it before I became an affiliate of Simple Studies, but now I do receive some compensation if you purchase through my link. Thank you!
