I’ve heard from a lot of parents that they are afraid to homeschool because they are worried they won’t be able to teach their children to read. I was not one of these parents. I was completely confident in my ability to teach reading. But guess what? Teaching my child to read has been one of the most difficult things I’ve ever tried to do. I think my child is/was a particularly difficult case. Chances are that your child will be much easier to teach!
Since we’ve had such a struggle, I’ve become very familiar with many different programs and resources. We used five different phonics programs. We worked on reading every day. We had fights about it every day. Then I finally got smart and asked a veteran first grade teacher for help. And do you know what she told me I was missing? FUN.
Ugh. Guilty. So guilty. Our reading lessons were not fun. So I put away all of my curricula and we focused on fun. See each post below to see our favorite (FUN) materials that help your child learn to read.
- Learning letters and sounds
- Phonemic awareness
- Sight words
